Today there is a BIG event in the Netherlands and this year it happens in Groningen.
It is a visit of Santa Claus (called Sinterklaas in Dutch), who every year comes to The Netherlands.
Sinterklaas traditionally arrives in the Netherlands each year in mid-November (usually on a Saturday) by steamboat from Spain. Upon his arrival, Sinterklaas parades through the streets on his gray horse Amerigo, welcomed by cheering children. This event is broadcast live on national television in the Netherlands and Belgium. His Zwarte Piet assistants throw candy and small, round, gingerbread-like cookies (called "kruidnoten" or "pepernoten" which means "spice nuts" or "pepper nuts") into the crowd. The children welcome him by singing traditional Sinterklaas songs. Sinterklaas visits schools, hospitals and shopping centers. After this arrival, all towns with a dock usually celebrate their own "intocht van Sinterklaas" (arrival of Sinterklaas). Local arrivals usually take place later on the same Saturday of the national arrival, the next Sunday (the day after he arrives in the Netherlands or Belgium), or one weekend after the national arrival. Dziś mamy wielkie wydarzenie w Holandii - przybycie Świętego Mikołaja (po holendersku nazywa się on Sinterklaas), które w tym roku ma miejsce w Groningen.
Sinterklaas tradycyjnie przybywa do Holandii każdego roku w połowie listopada (najczęściej w sobotę ) parowcem z Hiszpanii. Na jego przyjazd przygotowywane są parady, Sinterklaas przejeżdża ulicami na szarym koniu Amerigo, dopingowany przez dzieci. To wydarzenie jest transmitowane na żywo w telewizji w Holandii i Belgii. Zwarte Piet - jego asystenci, rzucają słodycze i małe, okrągłe, przypominające piernik ciasteczka "kruidnoten" albo "pepernoten" (czyli "korzenne orzeszki" albo "pikantne orzeszki") w tłum. Dzieci witają go śpiewając tradycyjne piosenki. Sinterklaas odwiedza szkoły, szpitale i centra handlowe. Po przyjeździe, wszystkie miasta świętują swoje własne "intocht van Sinterklaas" (przybycie Sinterklaas). Zazwyczaj lokalne obchody są w tą samą sobotę i następną niedzielę (dzień po przybyciu do Holandii i Belgii). W miejsca do których nie można dotrzeć statkiem, Sinterklaas przybywa pociągiem, konno, a nawet wozem strażackim.
